Obituary of Jian Zhang

Jian Zhang passed away December 11, 2022 in Iowa City. He was 60 years old. Jian’s family will receive guests at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation on Thursday, December 15, from 10:30-11:00 am, concluding with a sharing of memories at 11:00 am. Jian will be laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City following the sharing of memories. Jian was born September 17, 1962 in the Hunan province of China. Jian was an immunologist. Making scientific advances in immunology is his life-long passion and he made remarkable accomplishments in the field. Perseverance and hard work are his hallmark. He was well regarded and respected by students and colleagues. When he wasn’t working, Jian liked to relax watching nature documentaries on National Geographic or Animal Planet. He enjoyed cooking and often compared it to his work – he enjoyed using the scientific process to accurately recreate flavors he experienced in his travels. Jian was also known for his ability to cook the perfect noodle. Jian loved his family. His wife, Hui, and his son, Li, were his greatest advocates and they worked tirelessly together to build a successful life.
