Obituary of David A. Sovers
David A. Sovers, formally of lowa City, passed away Monday, October 3, 2022, in Maricopa, Arizona, at the age of 79. Born in lowa City on September 21, 1943, he was the son of Robert Sovers and Mildred nee Neuzil. He was a 1961 graduate of City High School and joined the US Army later that year. David was deployed overseas and was honorably discharged In 1965. He then served in the lowa National Guard, where he was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1990. David’s primary career took place at the Veterans Hospital in lowa City, Iowa, where he was a Healthcare Tech and Nursing Assistant until his retirement in 1998.
After his retirement, David relocated to California to be closer to his children and grandchildren. In 2018 he followed his daughter’s family to Arizona as he needed more care and assistance. He experienced much beyond his military service and healthcare career. This included two marriages, two divorces, overcoming alcoholism in his early 40’s, conquering bladder cancer in his 70’s and living with dementia for many years prior to his passing. He had a deep devotion to the Christian faith which was an important part of daily life.
David will be dearly missed by his daughter Janice (Christopher) Baltazar, his son James (Kelli) Sovers, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is survived by siblings Donna (Richard) Jondle, Cheryl Figueroa, Vickie (Dan) Dean, Robbie Sovers and Gary Sovers. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Memorial services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Mausoleum located at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Military honors will be provided honoring his service to his country.
