Graveside Service at the Mausoleum
Condolences
When I think of Grandpa Dave, I think of frozen custard treats, years spent calling for us (mostly me) to hurry up and get in the car for school or we were going to be late, and decades of birthday cards. He was almost like a third parent for us when we were growing up. With two working parents, he filled in the gaps to cart us to and from school, to and from ballet and karate, and whatever else came up. He moved from Iowa to California to spend more time with his kids and his grandkids, and although he had social events at his apartment complex and responsibilities at church, most of his time was spent doing just that - spending time with his family. He was at our house for every Thanksgiving and Christmas since I can remember. As I got older I enjoyed being able to start to choose small personalized Christmas gifts for him that I thought he'd like, many including pictures of his grandkids. I wasn't always the kindest to Grandpa - I tried my best as an adult to make up for my teenage attitude and angst. We didn't have a lot in common but I listened to his religious stories and he asked about my relationship and jobs and school. He always told me and my husband to talk and be good to each other.
I am so thankful that he got to spend a few years with our family and his great granddaughter Makaia close by when he moved to Arizona. As the dementia took over, he definitely wasn't the same person I remembered from when I was a kid - but he was still there in some ways and our daughter was always excited to go visit Great Grandpa Dave.
I will cherish our relationship and the memories I have of him forever. Small things make me think of him, and I picture him in his straw hat and his white New Balances driving his little silver Echo. Love you Grandpa, we miss you.
Being his son-in-law, I will be forever thankful for all the time and assistance Dave gave me and Janice, since his move to California from Iowa back in 1998. During the 15+ years of the busiest time in my young family’s life, his care and attention for our daughter and son was simply priceless. Also, I am very happy Dave was eventually able to live close to and enjoy life with his great granddaughter. We miss him, but his memory will always be a blessing to our family.
On behalf of the staff at the Iowa City VA Medical Center, I send heartfelt condolences. Those who knew Dave and had the good fortune to work with him were all the better from that experience.
We knew him as a dedicated employee and team member who took excellent care of our veterans. He was reliable and steadfast providing valuable guidance to new employees for which he was well respected.
I remember him as a quiet and reflective individual who looked forward to getting out west to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren. I was glad to learn he was able to share precious time with his family as he had always planned and hoped to do.
Grandpa was a key presence in my family's life growing up; having two parents that worked long hours meant that my sister and I needed someone else around to be there for us, and Grandpa filled that role. Taking us to and from school, the park, and out to eat at our favorite restaurants, he helped in ways that made the logistics of our day to day life possible. If nothing else, he did right by his grandkids.
Janice, I am so sorry to learn of your father's passing. I know how much you enjoyed having your parents both so close to you after living apart. My prayers to your family.
