Obituary of William "Bill" Vorheis
William W. Vorheis, 94, lifetime resident and longtime businessman of Iowa City died Wednesday January 17, 2018, at the Lantern Park Nursing Care Center.
A time to remember, celebrate and share Bill’s life among family and friends will be held on Sunday, January 28th from 12 noon till 5 pm at B.P.O. Elk's Lodge 590. Private family services with burial and military honors will be held prior to this event. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Johnson County Veterans Affairs to support our local Veterans. Bill was born December 2, 1923 in Iowa City, the son of Levi and Hazel (Pomeroy) Vorheis. He attended Iowa City schools, graduating from City High School in December of 1941, so he could join the Navy to fight for his country in WWII. Returning to Iowa City, he married Elaine Swails on February 16, 1946. He owned and operated Vorheis Refrigeration for over 40 years.
Bill was a member of the Elks, West Liberty, and West Branch Golf Course Clubs. He was a member of many bowling leagues over the years. Many will remember Bill his love of golf and collecting thousands of golf balls over the years. He found relaxation in searching for lost golf balls during his lunch breaks. Bill scored 12 hole-in-ones during his golf days, one of them being at the age of 87!
His family includes two sons and their wives, Dr. Stephen and Rebecca Vorheis and Cary and Tammy Vorheis; three grandchildren, Kiersten Vorheis Kerr (Paul), Amy Petri (Tony), and Andrew; and two great grandsons Sullivan Kerr and Alec Petri.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elaine.
