Obituary of Karl J. Buchmayer
Karl J. Buchmayer, age 77 of rural Iowa City died at his home Friday, September 29, 2006, following complications of dementia. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 3, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with burial at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his memory. Karl Joseph Buchmayer was born May 17, 1929, on the family farm in rural Johnson County, Iowa the son of Joseph F. and Nevada Neva M. (Kessler) Buchmayer. He attended Iowa City schools graduating with the Class of 1949 from City High School. On May 10, 1951, Karl was united in marriage to Leona Mae Kleinschmidt at the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. During the Korean Conflict Karl served his country in the United States Army. Returning from service Karl became the fourth generation of his family to farm the family farm, a tradition which his son Rory has carried on. In addition to farming, Karl has been a long time representative of Watkins Products for this area. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, enjoyed camping with his family, doing woodworking projects, listening to country music, but most of all he loved his family and his farm! His family includes his wife of fifty-five years, Leona; daughters, Dianna Fuhrmeister and her husband, John of Iowa City, and Barbara Zarifis and her husband, Clark of Iowa City; sons, Kerry Buchmayer and his wife, Barb of Purdin, MO, and Rory Buchmayer of Iowa City; eight grandchildren, Matthew Fuhrmeister and his wife, Carmen; Amy Fuhrmeister, Lindsey Fuhrmeister, Joanna Fuhrmeister, Blair Buchmayer, Austin Buchmayer, Adam Zarifis and Megan Zarifis; sisters, Orianna Haman of Iowa City, and Jean Hahn and her husband, Elmer of Solon. Karl was preceded in death by his parents. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Karls family and his services.
