Obituary of Beverly I. Gates

Beverly Irene Gates, age 67 of North Liberty died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 8, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty with the Reverend Alecia Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8pm Wednesday at the church. Graveside services will be held at 4pm Thursday at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa. Beverly Irene Frederick was born June 8, 1938, in Ottumwa, Iowa the daughter of Harold C. and Edna (Dysert) Frederick. Following graduation from Ottumwa High School, she graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Ottumwa in 1959. She was married to Ron Hampshire and later Daniel Gates. For over forty years she has been a registered nurse specializing in the mental health and chemical dependency fields. She was an active member of the North Liberty United Methodist Church, where she taught adult Sunday school, involved in the companion group, and served on the board of trustees. She enjoyed caring for others’ pets, as “Doggie Daycare”, also so enjoyed spending time with her “Golden Friends” group. But most of all, she treasured her family, friends and her pets; they have always been there for her, as she was for them! Her family includes her mother, Edna Barker of Cedar Rapids; Beverly’s daughters, Lisa Fratzke and her husband, Steve of Cedar Rapids, Ronda Hampshire and her partner, Janet McClain of Cedar Rapids, and Kim Calef and her husband, Ray of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Vincent Abben, Haven Abben, Clare Abben, Corbin Evert-Fratzke, Jessy Calef and Jackson Calef; surrogate children, Jean Walker, Larry Strait, and Joni Frederick; her faithful dog, Lovie, and a host of good friends. She was preceded in death by her father, son, Monte Hampshire; brothers, Donnie Frederick, and sister, Betty Taylor. When you think of Beverly you see such a colorful soul in mind, spirit and dress.
