Obituary of Evelyn L. Smith

Evelyn L. Smith, 89, formerly of Iowa City, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at Mill Pond Retirement Home in Ankeny, following a brief illness. Mrs. Smith's funeral is scheduled for 3 PM Sunday, October 9th at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Friends may visit at the funeral home after 2 PM Sunday. Evelyn was born Feb. 10, 1916 near Hills, the twin daughter of Fred and Nellie Beard. She married Carl D. Smith June 13, 1938, and lived in Wellman, the Sharon Center area, and Coralville. Evelyn was retired from the University of Iowa after 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl D. Smith, brothers Frederick, Paul, and Donald Beard, and is survived by twin sister Ellen Rhodes of Ankeny, IA, brother John Beard of Iowa City, IA, and sister Treva Rothenberg of Santa Ana, CA. Her descendants are, to date, son Robert Smith of Richfield, MN, granddaughters Kira Smith of Brooklyn Park, MN and Lorna Smith of Seattle, WA, and great-grandsons Jalen and Xavier Chaney.
