Obituary of Evelyn H. Bliss

Evelyn Marjorie Hovell Bliss, age 96, of Neosho, Missouri, formerly of Iowa City, died Thursday, August 12, 2004, in Neosho. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.. Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2004, at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in Evelyn’s name to the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City or Camp Courageous. Evelyn Marjorie Hovell was born February 20, 1908, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Albert A. and Annie Belle (Finch) Hovell. She graduated from Low Heywood High School in Stamford, CT. She also attended junior college at Linden Hall Seminary, and Victoria College at the University of Toronto. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Literature from Columbia University. Evelyn was a secretary to the Assistant Director and Project Assistant of House Staff Affairs at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She retired in 1974. Evelyn previously resided in Brooklyn, NY, Old Greenwich, CT, Vancouver, WA, Portland, OR, Memphis, TN, Little Rock, AR, Woodward, OK, Denver, CO, USNA Station, Patuxent River, MD and was a resident of Iowa City from September 1941 until June of 2001. She then lived in Neosho, MO until her death. Evelyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Iowa City Woman’s Club and the AARP Johnson County Chapter 1816. Her family includes a daughter and her husband, Sylvia and Robert Bailey of Limington, ME, a son and his wife, Rodger and Lora Bliss of Pineville, MO, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Evelyn’s family and her services.
