Obituary of Edna Alice Borts

Edna Alice Borts, age 102, of 701 Oaknoll Drive, Iowa City died Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City. In honor of Alice’s wishes, no funeral services were held, burial was at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Miss Borts was born October 4, 1900, in Iowa city the daughter of Albert and Alice Smith Borts. She graduated from Iowa City City High School and had attended the Univesity of Iowa. She then enrolled in the nursing program at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines graduating with her nursing degree in 1926. For several years she was a nurse at the State University of Iowa Hospital, before transferring to the Dental College where she worked for over thirty-four years. She continued in the nursing field until her retirement in private duty practice and at the University of Iowa Hospitals. During this time she obtained her Master’s degree in nursing and taught many students how to take x-rays. Alice was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine and the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where the land that the church is built was donated her her grandfather, David Borts. Her family inlcudes a number of nieces and nephews living outside this area.
