Obituary of Louis H. Lundquist

Hal was married to Betty Ireland Lundquist June 20, 1948. They have made Iowa City their home since that date. His parents, Richard and Pearl Lundquist preceded him in death as did his only sister, Lucille Hayes. His family includes his wife, Betty Ireland Lundquist; their daughter, Ann Lundquist and her husband, Martin Smith of Drake, Colorado; their son, Gary and his wife, Barbara Lundquist and their three children, Stephanie, Jonathan, and Spencer Lundquist all of Iowa City. Hal was born October 26, 1914, in Minneapolis, MN; He grew up in Rochester where his father was a pathologist for the mayo Clinic. He received his B.A. Degree from the University of Minnesota and had almost completed his M.A. degree at the former Mankato Teacher’s College, when he enlisted in the service of the Army Air Corps in 1941. Hal served the military until 1945 when World War II ended. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served in the South Pacific, including New Guinea and the Philippines. He returned from the service and was assistant manager of Iowa Book and Supply under the late Ray Aderholt until buying a gift store “Halls Gifts in May of 1951. It was located south of the Old Hotel Jefferson building and was later named Cards et Cetera. At the time of the downtown Urban Renewal, his business was one of the first tenants in the Old Capitol Mall. The store became known as Lundy’s Hallmark. Hal was a member of the First united Methodist Church, Iowa City Noon Optimists, and past member of the Chamber of Commerce. He served on many committees and was well known throughout the Iowa City Community. He retired in February 1985 after selling his two stores to his son, Gary Lundquist. He then volunteered for many years at Mercy Hospital, and served as president of the local A.A.R.P. in his retirement. Memorial donations can be made in Hal’s memory to the First United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice.
