Obituary of Peter Huyck
Peter Huyck, age 84, of Iowa City died peacefully at home Sunday, August 4, 2024.
Peter was born June 3, 1940, to Bill and Bettie Jane (Hazelwood) Huyck in Des Moines, IA. He graduated with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Iowa in 1962. Peter then went on to serve in the United States Air Force from 1963-1967, receiving the S.E. Asia Campaign Ribbon. Following his service, he worked in the Advanced Technology division at IBM (1968-1971), at Yellow Cab in Iowa City (1975-1982), and as a bus driver for Iowa City Transit from 1982 until his retirement in 2003.
Peter is the author of Design and Memory: Computer Programming in the 20th Century (with Nellie Kremenak, McGraw Hill, 1980); Rosary Psalms (St. Paul’s Press UK, 1996); Rose Fire (Amazon Press, 2019) and its companion play Rose Fire [The Script] (Amazon Press, 2021); and The Rosary Project (Amazon Press, 2022).
Peter is preceded in death by Cheryl, his cherished wife of nearly 40 years, and is survived by his children, grandchildren and countless friends.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00am Friday, August 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City (Sunday parking ordinance in effect). In lieu of a wake, an open A.A. meeting will be held at Gay & Ciha, 2720 Muscatine Ave. in Iowa City, at 7:00pm on Thursday, August 15, with a visitation preceding at 6:00pm.
