Obituary of Neal Nelson Llewellyn
Dr. Neal N. Llewellyn age 90, died Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City.
He was born in the coal mining town of Spring Hill, IA, to John D. and Helen (Sparks) Llewellyn on September 4, 1933. Being raised in Des Moines, IA, he graduated from East High School in 1951, then received a B.A. degree from Drake University with majors in chemistry and mathematics in 1955.He graduated from the University of Iowa College of medicine in 1959. Following completion of a rotating internship at Cincinnati General Hospital, he returned to Iowa City and completed a residency in General Surgery in 1964, and was board certified in 1965. He was on the surgery staff at the V.A. hospital for one year and then joined the surgical practice of Scanlon, Dulin, and Yetter associated with Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
In 1966, he was commissioned with the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Haven as well as the Long Beach Naval Hospital. In 1968, he was assigned to the 1st Marine Division and stationed in DaNang and Chu Lai, South Viet Nam where he received a Bronze Star. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa City and resumed staff privileges at Mercy Hospital until his retirement in 1996.
He enjoyed water and snow skiing, sail boating, wind-surfing, and the joy of family and friends.
His parents and a sister (Colleen Gordinier) preceded him in death. He is survived by a sister Billie Herriott; two nieces, Diane Gordinier Runge (Jack), and Mary Bendickson; four nephews, David Gordinier, Dr. Michael Herriott (Mary), John Gordinier (Grace Clinton) and Clifford Herriott (Tammy) a number of grandnieces, grandnephews and great-grandnieces.
Neal requested a simple cremation with no public services.
