Obituary of Carol Ann Boal

Carol Boal, age 89, of Iowa City, died Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Crestview Specialty Care in West Branch.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Visitation will precede the services at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Private family burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be directed to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Carol Taylor Boal was born in Moberly, Missouri, on April 15, 1935, to Henry and Dorothy (Ash) Taylor. She grew up and lived in Moberly up until she moved to Gulfport, Mississippi to enroll at the Gulf Park College for Women. After finishing her studies in Gulfport Carol moved to Columbia, Missouri and began attending the University of Missouri. She would graduate in 1958 with a degree in Music. Carol was very proud of her time spent as a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Missouri.

After earning her degree Carol moved to Eddyville, Iowa to begin her career as a music teacher. While she worked in Eddyville she met William “Jack” Boal. In 1960 the couple was united in marriage in Moberly, Missouri. Carol and Jack started their family in Eddyville and kept it growing once they moved to Iowa City. Carol took time away from work to care for their children for a number of years, always sure not to miss any of their activities. She returned to work for the Iowa City Public School District as a paraeducator. Carol retired from her career in education in 2001.

In retirement Carol and Jack spent their winters in Arizona. They also spent as much time as they could with their grandchildren. Jack died in 2013, and Carol spent the rest of her life living on the east side of Iowa City. She loved to play bridge with her friends, and she looked forward to going out to eat with her family after church.

Carol was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City. She served on the church council and as a member of the church circle. She also taught junior choir and was a founding member of Lutheran Social Services.

Carol’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Legacy Senior Living and Crestview Specialty Care for the compassion and care they provided her. 

Carol’s family includes her children and their spouses, David Alan and Elizabeth (Oehler) Boal of Iowa City, Melinda Ann “Mindy” and Woodrow II “Woody” Houser of rural Beresford, South Dakota, and Brenda Lynn Vrchoticky of rural Wilton/Tipton; ten grandchildren, Bryan and Dan (Britany) Boal, Samantha “Sam” (Michael), Alina “Ali” (Joe), Benjamin and Taylor Houser, and Eleanor (Dale), Maximillian “Max”, Reese (Emily) and Bess Vrchoticky; great-grandson, Noah William Boal; sister, Eleanor Cecille “Cecy” Rice and her husband Karl; sister-in-law, Glenda (Malcolm) Alvine; and a host of extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Boal; parents, Henry and Dorothy (Ash) Taylor; infant granddaughter, Miranda Houser; son-in-law, Arthur Lee Vrchoticky; her infant brother; and uncles aunts and cousins.
