Obituary of Alan B. Moy

Alan B. Moy, MD died at home Monday, April 8, 2024, with his wife by his side after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, April 13, 2024, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, where a parish rosary will be said beginning at 10am Saturday. His family includes his wife, Jeanne; their children, Stephen, Lisa, Jenni Seo-Moy (John Seo)  and Bridget; his mother, Lloyda Moy; brother, James Moy (Nina Fertey); and nephews, Andrew Fertey Moy(Viet Anh), Keith Fertey Moy (Jen Calvo) and niece, Hannah Fertey Moy (Joe Ranieri). He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Moy.

Alan was born April 1, 1959, in Sacramento, CA to Ernest and Lloyda Moy. He attended Christian Brothers High School where he first showed an interest in medicine and research by winning Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He received a BS degree in biochemistry at the University of California at Davis followed by a MD degree from Creighton University in 1985,where he met his wife Jeanne. They married in 1985, in Omaha and moved to St. Louis where Alan did his Internal Medicine residency at St. Louis University. Later they moved to Iowa City for Alan’s subspecialty training in pulmonary and critical care at the University of Iowa. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Moy remained at the University of Iowa on faculty between 1994-2005 and tenured in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. In 2005 Dr. Moy left his faculty position to co-found Cellular Engineering Technologies (CET), a pro-life biotech company in Coralville, IA.  In 2006, Dr. Moy founded the John Paul II Medical Research Institute a non-profit research institute devoted toward the use of adult stem cells for treating orphan diseases, degenerative neurological diseases, regenerative medicine and cancer.  He also maintained a private practice in Pulmonary Medicine including outreach to distant underserved areas in eastern Iowa. In 2009 the Small Business Commerce Association selected CET among the Best Business Award in the commercial biotechnology category, which recognizes the top 5 percent of small businesses throughout the country.  When not practicing medicine, Dr Moy enjoyed lap swimming at the Coralville Rec Center, often accompanied by his daughter Bridget, and fishing in Minnesota with his son Stephen.
