Obituary of Helen Maloy

Helen Francis Maloy, 80, Storm Lake, died on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Methodist Manor. No service is planned at this time.

Helen Francis Sterler was born on October 21, 1943, in Sibley, Iowa, to Claus and Ardis (Huls) Sterler. She attended school in Sibley, then went on to attend Stewarts Cosmetology School in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Helen met, Mark Thomas “Tom” Maloy in LeMars, where Tom was a co-owner in a barber business. Helen was working as a waitress in a nearby restaurant. Helen and Tom were married in South Dakota on August 19, 1963. 

The couple moved to Manilla, Iowa, where Helen operated her own beauty salon for 26 years next door to Tom’s barber shop. The couple had three children, Daniel, Patricia and Staci.

Tom retired in 1993 and the couple moved to Storm Lake to be by all three of their children. They established an orthotics business where Tom made custom orthotics and Helen worked as an instructor at Faust Institute of Cosmetology.

For the next 20 years, the couple lived on an 18-hole golf course where they could be found playing a round most days. There wasn’t a golf  tournament in the area that Helen and Tom didn’t play in. They also enjoyed bowling, but most of all they liked spending time with their family and friends. Helen loved the holidays with Christmas being her favorite.

Helen is survived by her children: Dan (Angie) Maloy, Fonda; Patti (Eric) Bruck, Storm Lake and Staci Maloy and Dana Vennink, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  A sister, Sandy Blau, Sibley. Surviving are grandchildren, Tiffany (Aaron) Nelson, Mark Bruck and Nate Titus and one great grandchild, Caitlin Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Irene Sterler, Betty Ketterling and Clarice Roth and brothers, Robert Sterler and Henry Sterler.
