My mother, Laura was reminiscing today, and it occurred to her that she had not heard from Mabel as as usual at Christmas time. I searched for her and found that your mother had passed. Mom asked me to convey her condolences, and to tell you how much she appreciated the warmth and kindness of your mother and the hospitality that was shown to us during our three years in Iowa city from 1966 to 1969. Mom is 101 and is in independent living in a place called Juniper Village in Bensalem Pennsylvania.

So sorry to hear about your Mom. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies to you all. I feel as though I have known Mabel for so long now, first at West Ridge, and even when she was at RidgeView next door, we would pick her up and take her on our outings, and then at the Views of Marion. I have known Carla for a long time and know what a dedicated daughter she was, coming to see Mabel frequently and taking her outside to get some fresh air or convincing her to ride the exercise bike, which took more convincing some days than others. But during the pandemic I was happy to get to help facilitate the video calls and got to know Kim, Carmen and and Kirk. It didn't surprise me that Mabel raised such a wonderful family. Mabel had a great sense of humor but also let you know if she didn't like something, and you always knew her faith was important to her. I will miss her very much. Thank you for sharing her with me over the past 10 years!

Dear Carla,

I don't have a memory of your mom to share - just a note of gratitude to her for raising an amazing daughter that I am blessed to call my friend. If she failed to tell you - or did not tell you often enough - she is proud of who you and your faithfulness to her, especially over these last few challenging years.

May your Mom rest in peace and enjoy being reunited with your Dad! Hopefully she will save a place for us at the table! May you also rest from all the trips to Iowa City, the worry, and the "doing" that is associated with loving caregiving.
