In Loving Memory of Robert A. Shellady

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert A. Shellady, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Robert peacefully departed from this world on September 23, 2023 surrounded by his children at the age of 88.

Robert, known to many as Bob, was born on August 14, 1935 in Aledo, Illinois and was the son of Robert G. Shellady and Maidie M. Williams.  He grew up in Burlington, Iowa and moved to Iowa City as a teenager where he graduated in 1953 from Iowa City High School.  Bob was a voracious reader who had an insatiable curiosity and love for learning throughout his life.

Bob's professional journey was marked by dedication and success. After earning his licensure from the Federal Communication Commission, Bob spent 21 years working at KXIC, Iowa City’s first commercial radio station. Bob, started as an “AM morning man” with shows such as “What’s your Problem?” and later transitioned to serving as a radio engineer and program director for KXIC as it added a FM station. His colleagues remember him as a diligent and reliable team member, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer sage advice.  After leaving KXIC in 1977, he founded Superior Real Estate where he worked as a successful commercial real estate broker until his retirement.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was a true family man. He met the love of his life, Phillys Schonauer, and they embarked on a beautiful journey together, celebrating 63 years of marriage until her death in 2018. Their love was an inspiration to all who knew them. Bob was a devoted father to Michael, Christopher, and Suzanne providing them with love, guidance, and unwavering support throughout their lives.  His grandchildren Allie, Hailey, Bobby, and Morgan brought him immense happiness and he relished watching them grow into remarkable young adults. He also cherished his sister Claudia who similarly shared his interest in family genealogy.

In his free time, Bob pursued a wide range of interests. He was a member of the fraternal organization of Masons where he developed many lifelong relationships. His passion for wood working, restoring his 1947 Ford convertible, and collecting Burlington Zephyrs brought joy to his life and allowed him to connect with others who shared his enthusiasm. He was known for his willingness to help many with challenging restorations, which endeared him to countless friends and acquaintances.  His warm smile, sense of humor, and kindness left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him.

Bob leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and integrity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Although we mourn his passing, we take comfort in the cherished memories we shared with him and the valuable lessons he taught us about living a life filled with love and compassion.

As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember the remarkable life of Robert A. Shellady and honor his memory by continuing to live our lives with the same love, kindness, and dedication that he exemplified throughout his journey.
