Obituary of Charles Nuechter

Charles Thomas Nuechter “Charlie” passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence after a sudden illness.

Charlie was born in Iowa City on November 7, 1935, to August and Louise (Machovec) Nuechter. Charlie attended Iowa City Schools, Horace Mann Elementary, Central Junior High, and graduated from City High School in 1954. He was an accomplished athlete in baseball and football. Charlie was a member of the “mythical” state championship City High football team of 1953.

Charlie was the proprietor of several service stations in the Iowa City area, including Charlie’s DX on the site of the new Voxman Music Facilities. He later worked as a service manager at Dunlap Oldsmobile and Toyota of Iowa City. In his retirement, he was employed at Mercy Hospital as a valet as well as a parking lot attendant.

Charlie was a long-time member of the Elks Club where he enjoyed many rounds of golf. He was also an avid skier and was fortunate to briefly live in Colorado and ski the slopes of the Rockies.

He is survived by many loved ones, those to include son, Mike Nuechter (Shelly); daughter, Chris (Richard) Stalkfleet; son-in-law, Mark Faktor; grandsons, Brandon Faktor, Dillon Faktor, Charles Nuechter (Cynthia), Jacob Nuechter (Chylah) and granddaughter, Jessica Nuechter; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Nuechter, Samuel Nuechter and Arabella Nuechter; his long-time partner, Marcia (Lehman) Greiner, her children and grandchildren as well as the extended Lehman family; his sister, Rose Sadler and her daughters, Anne Cade and Mary Verwers.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Cheryl; nephew, Pat Sadler and former wife and mother of his children, Beverly Parker.

The family is very grateful for all the genuine friendships and loving care that the Oaknoll staff provided for Charlie.  The family requests memorials in Charlie’s name be made to Oaknoll, designated for Rec Therapy. He became part of the staff when he played Santa.

A time for family and friends to gather to celebrate Charlie’s life will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2023, from 2 – 4pm concluding with remarks at 4pm at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial with military honors will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery following services at the funeral home on Sunday.  Charlie was a long-standing, Packer and Hawkeye fan.
