Mikal Christopher Hendrickson, a loving father, talented chef, and a proud veteran, passed away on July 24, 2023, at 10:58 am at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Born on March 22, 1965, in Rapid City, South Dakota, Mikal's life journey led him to touch the hearts of many during his time on this earth.
Mikal's early years were spent in Des Moines, Iowa, where he attended Hubbell Elementary, Merrill Jr High, and Roosevelt High School. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for the culinary arts, a love that would stay with him throughout his life. While in Des Moines, he served as the kitchen manager for the popular Des Moines Mexican restaurant El Patio. His culinary skills blossomed during his service in the US Army, where he dedicated himself to perfecting his craft.
After his service in the military, Mikal further honed his talents by attending classes at the University of Iowa. It was there that he found his home in Coralville, and this charming community became the backdrop of most of his adult life. Coralville was not only where Mikal lived but also where he thrived, leaving a lasting impact on those he met.
Beyond his culinary prowess and dedication to his community, Mikal was a true patriot. He proudly served in the US Army and continued his service in the Reserves, showcasing his unwavering commitment to his country.
Carnival Cruise Line will miss Mikal as he was an avid cruise enthusiast and a loyal carnival customer. He enjoyed sailing with friends and family. But it is Mikal’s generosity of spirit, infectious kindness, sense of humor and hearty laugh that will be missed most.
In addition to his passion for cooking, Mikal had a profound love for animals. He deeply cared for the welfare of all creatures, great and small. In his honor, we kindly ask for your support in making a difference in the lives of these innocent beings. Contributions to the ASPCA or the local No-Kill Animal Shelter will help provide much-needed care, love, and shelter to abandoned and mistreated animals, giving them a chance at a better life – a cause that Mikal held dear to his heart.
Mikal Christopher Hendrickson is survived by his beloved daughter, who was the light of his life. His three brothers Frederick Scott Hendrickson (Andrea Orr), Gary Hendrickson, Patrik Hendrickson, his two half brothers George Hendrickson and Erik Hastings and his half sister Sarah Phillippi (Drew Phillippi).
