In 1976, the then President of Montana State University established the first Department of Women's Athletics. I chaired the search committee that subsequently recommended the hiring of Dr. Virginia Hunt. She arrived to lead the department for the next 16 Years. During her tenure, Ginny hired superb coaches, added four new women's sports to the existing four and became a leader, mentor, colleague and friend to many. In addition to her athletic leadership, Ginny served on several doctoral committees in the department of education and served two years as the chair of Faculty Council. She was my close friend since she arrived in 1977. Many former athletes and coaches have paid verbal tributes to Ginny Hunt here at Montana State University. I am still saddened not to be able to call her while listening or watching Women's Bobcat Basketball. She was one of a kind, helping many.

I was a student at the College of Wooster (OH) from 1965-69 when Ginny taught, coached, & built a growing athletic program for women at the Division III level. She showed great enthusiasm for this task and was a very visible leader on campus. It was clear she was breaking new ground by elevating women's athletics from club sports to intercollegiate competition. I can only imagine the hurdles she had to overcome.

I am proud that Dr. Hunt was elected to the Wooster W Association Hall of Fame in 1985. Ginny was a national leader in every phase of women's athletics, all the way to the U.S. Olympic Committee level. I am proud that my alma mater afforded Ginny Hunt the opportunity to show the way in college athletics for women. She was the right woman to lead the charge and make things right for women athletes.
