I had the pleasure of teaching and coaching T&F at Indianola at the same time as Coach Van Scoy- he coached the girls and I coached the boys. He had took great joy in seeing the students and the athletes that he taught and coached succeed in their many different ways. When there were some non-busy times at practice or a meet, he would tell me stories about some of the incredible experiences he had growing up and in his career. It was amazing to learn of the many different things he had gone through and been a part of. He shared that some of those experiences led him to have such a strong faith. I was always impressed with how he "walked the walk". He will be missed by many.

Rick was my track coach in high school, and the only reason I went out for track at all was because I knew he loved Jesus (My only regret was not going out for track sooner!). We had crossed paths previously at FCA, and had a mutual friend in Jan Werling.

Coach VanScoy was always your biggest fan, no matter what you did. He always believed in you and encouraged you.

He showed me the joy of running. He glorified God in everything he did. He emulated Christ in word and deed, and inspired so many. What a wonderful example of Jesus he was to this world! He will be greatly missed.

Coach VanScoy made a huge impact in my life as an athlete in track and cross country. He was always a supporter and encourager with a positive attitude. He exuded such joy that I know could have only come from Jesus Christ. As a runner, I knew that no matter how my athletic performance was that he still believed in me! He will be very missed!

So very sorry for your loss. Brings back memories of all the times I spent with Carrie at the house, high school sports and the Christmas light he put up each year. Carrie and Reese, thinking of you and my condolences to the whole family.

Coach VanScoy was an amazing man/coach! He truly cared for his students/athletes! He had a way of encouragement even to the not so gifted athlete! He wanted the best for everyone He had the pleasure of coaching! Coach V you will be missed but looking forward to seeing you again someday! Enjoy praising God at his feet in heaven.

Rick was my daughter's, Alanna Kiene, track coach from 7th grade to 11th grade. 12th grade was covid year. He was the best coach ever and had the kids say a prayer when my own mom collapsed at the end of the track meet. Spent many a cold night sitting with Mary in the stands. Alanna and I send condolences to the family and hope that his spirit will continue with all the coaches in the future. He will be missed.

Coach VanScoy was the best track coach I could have asked for, he pushed us to better athletes and humans every single day. His kindness was unmatched and he truly cared about every person on his team. He was such a kind person with a big heart. I can't put into words how big of an impact he has had on my life. He will be dearly missed by many. Rest easy coach.

I substituted in Rick’s classrooms in Indianola and always knew he was a special man in his care to seeing to it that my day went well with his students. He knew the value of life and seemed to impress that on all that he had contact with. His smile was contagious. My heart goes out to all of his family.

I'm so sorry to hear about Rick. I remember him as always kind and patient--he was a pleasure to be around, especially during sped meetings. (((hugs)))

I remember Rick as a very nice & good man. It's been years since those Dawson days, but I miss you all dearly. He was a devoted husband & Dad. My condolences go out to the family.

Sorry for your loss. I knew Rick from working together at Indianola High School and then subbing at Martensdale. Great guy. He will be missed.

So very sorry for your loss. I didn't know Rick well but when I retired from Indianola Community Schools in 2007 he took over my position. I was so glad for that because he was a man of faith and helped out with FCA at Indianola. He inspired so many and I wish I could have known him better. Greg Abbott
