Darell Truitt
1940 - 2022
Condolences
My name is Allen Andrews (Andy) I served with Darrell at Warner Springs SERE school. I was also a Hospital Corpsman. Darrell introduced me to Black Powder shooting. He was very smart and way more mature then most of us at that school. I have spoken his name to many of my friends as there was an incident that should have taken both our lives.
May he rest in Peace.

I remember Darell as one of my earliest students in the Department of Religious Studies at U. of I. He took my course in Biblical/Palestinian Archaeology and at least one other course. He was rather quiet, yet attentive, and overall a good student. We had a chance meeting several years ago in Coral Ridge Mall where I was walking with my wife and two neighbors. Darell and I recognized each other immediately. I was grateful that after many years our paths crossed - truly a pleasurable moment.
I was saddened to hear of Darrell's passing. I came to know Darrel when he worked for my father-in-law, Ray Ipsen, at the Hobby and Gift Shop for many years. Darrell loved hobbies and he loved people.

I met Darell when I started at the University of Iowa in 1976. He befriended me as a Freshman and was an all around great friend. I would join him in gaming at his house, have me over to meals when I was a poor student. He was funny guy who always had a joke or story to share. He knew how to cheer a person up when they were down. We continued our friendship and I enjoyed seeing him, Marilyn, Jennifer and Casey when I came to visit. And yes, I helped coach soccer when I could, but I wasn’t sure if I was much help and the kids darn near killed me with all their energy running around. I will sorely miss him. He was like a brother to me. May he Rest In Peace.
Dear family of Darell, I went to school with Darell from 2nd grade at St. Patricks School in Burlington and graduated from Notre Dame with him. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and will be keeping you all in my prayers. It was not too long ago he contacted me to send him the children’s books my daughter wrote. He wanted to donate them to the daycare his granddaughter worked at. He was a special person and always thinking of what he could do for others. I will miss his updates about Marilyn that he posted weekly or more often on FB. I will not be able to attend the funeral tomorrow but will be thinking of all of you.
With my Deepest Sympathy,

We have been Crestview Ave neighbors to Darell & family for many years, he was the nicest guy on the block, ...we didn't know him well, but a pleasure anytime we had a chat.

I worked at UIHC for many years and as such crossed paths with Darrel many times. I remember his sly smile and shake of his head as he very competently performed his duties. I’m sure you will miss him terribly. You have my sincere sympathy.

I was in Scouts as a teenager. To my great good fortune Darell served as one of our Scoutmasters with his good friend John Tiffany. I have more than fond memories. Darell’s ability to use humor to gently reign in, correct, instruct and guide boys and young men was hugely impactful. I carry lessons, knowledge and a deep respect for him 5 decades later. My father was a Doc at UIHC and had great respect for Darrel’s skill and knowledge in his support of staff there. Whenever I saw Darell around town I would straitened up a bit in posture. His impact on our community, in small and large ways ripples forward. My deep condolences to the Truitt clan.

Darell, Marilyn, Jennifer, & Casey had been neighbors of my family for more many years. My sister and I grew up with Jennifer and Casey, and were good friends as kids. Darrell was always nice to me, and a pretty funny guy. He was my youth soccer coach for several years, and using his work resources, helped us kids make a movie project for school. I remember his train set, his old car under the carport, and him being a really good guy. I know he will be missed by many. My condolences go out to the Truitt family and all who knew him.
I'll always remember my friend Darell fondly - he more than tolerated my boisterous, new-guy-on-the-crew puppy-dog energy and zany ideas; he helped me to find ways to apply it. In particular, I am thankful that he included me in his family life, including my first exposure of many to the joys of coaching youth sports. My deepest sympathies go out to the Truitt family and to all who knew and loved Darell.
