Obituary of Mark S. Toth

Mark S. Toth, age 62 of Iowa City and formerly of Palos Park, Illinois passed Sunday, May 8, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. A Memorial Mass will be held at 6:30 pm Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville, where there will be a period of visitation one hour prior to the services. Toth was born November 13, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois. The son of Kenneth and Jean Marie (Feyen) Toth, residing in Oak Lawn. He graduated high school and headed to college, but it was clear early on that was not for him. He transitioned from school to be a sheet metal worker, installing roof deck in 1979. Mark strongly advocated for the acquisition of WDC in 1988 which opened a new revenue stream for Toth Industrial Sales Corp. Mark played a pivotal part in growing the family business into the largest metal deck supplier and erector from the late 90s to the early 2000s around the Chicagoland area. In 2015, he and his wife, Susan decided to follow their sons to Iowa City, where all the boys had attended the University of Iowa. Here, he continued in the construction field, working alongside his son Matt as a project foreman for City Construction. Mark was a devout Catholic. He faithfully attended mass on Saturdays at 5PM. He frequented St. Thomas More Catholic Church, while living in Iowa City, IA, and Our Lady of the Woods while living in Palos Park, IL. He was a strong believer of giving back, volunteering, and paying things forward. Mark was extremely involved in all aspects of his family's lives. His wife was the pride and sunshine of his life. He encouraged her to pursue her lifelong dream of being a P.E. teacher. More than anything, he and his wife prioritized being involved in their sons’ lives. This included coaching, educating, and constantly challenging them to be their best selves. Mark had the privilege of being the godfather to few and an uncle to many. His extended family meant the absolute world to him. He was passionate to support not only his family's successes, but also those in the community. He discovered early on that coaching was the most effective method to be involved in his children’s lives, while simultaneously having a positive impact on the community. Mark balanced the simple things in life in a unique way. He loved taking walks with his dogs, but only after getting on all fours and howling at them through the garage door. He enjoyed bike rides with his wife…on their tandem bike. He loved listening to Switchfoot on his iPod, with his early 2000’s plug-in headphones. His passions in life were: sitting in his screened-in porch, long talks and walks with his wife, reading, coffee, fantasy football, literally anything to do with Hawaii, great food, hiking, his Harley motorcycle, his Harley Swimsuit Calendar, teaching his dogs new tricks, Lemonheads, finding something in his house that was not “done right the first time,” but most importantly, making an impact in the world—one way or the other. His family includes his wife, Susan; their three sons, Matthew, Kyle, and Ryan; his daughter-in-law, Brady; his recently acquired yorkies, Sammy and Cooper; his father, Kenneth Toth; siblings, Lynn Prkut, Sue Morrissey, and Jeff Toth. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean and his brother, Dave.
