Obituary of Landis F. Fick
Landis F. Fick of Iowa City passed away on May 5, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 75.
Landis was born to Frank and Bette (Landes) Fick on April 23, 1947 and grew up in Clarksville, IA. As a child he loved the friendliness, warmth, and connections of a small town. Landis participated in every sport and activity possible.
Landis met the love of his life, Nancy (Green) Fick, at Ellsworth Community College in 1969. Their love for each other was instant and evident to everyone they would meet. They soon married on October 11, 1969 on Long Lake, WI at Nancy’s family’s cottage. Landis and Nancy shared the love of adventure which led them to travel the world prior to settling down in Iowa City where he graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Special Education. He then went on to earn his Master’s Degree and Ph”D” (everything but the dissertation) from the University of Iowa in Education Psychology before working at Child Psych at UIHC and then becoming a Special Education Consultant for Mississippi Bend AEA- impacting the lives of many children and educators.
Landis was the most wonderful, caring, and devoted father to their daughters Jessica and Eliza. He took great pride in attending all of his girls’ activities growing up and loved coaching youth soccer. Landis was always the dad that everyone wanted to be around. His love for cooking, entertaining, and famous one-liners kept the company coming back. Living in a house surrounded by women, Landis was thrilled to welcome two amazing sons-in-law into the family, Ted Proctor (Eliza) and Jesse Searls (Jessica). Ted and Jesse have committed to carrying on Landis’ legacy by improving their one-liners and keeping the family laughing.
In addition to being a loving husband and devoted father, Landis’ was the most incredible Papa to “his girls”, Harper (9), Holland (8), Tatum (6) and Blakely (4). He was the happiest when surrounded by his family! The girls get their love for art, music, dancing, and sports from their Papa.
Landis was truly a Renaissance Man. There was very little that he couldn’t do. He was the most excellent chef, fixer-upper, artist, dancer, collector of music, and fisherman. He took these skills to his most favorite place on Earth, The Cabin. Landis’ family was blessed with a generational cabin in the North Woods (Marcell, MN) on Three Island Lake. With his family and close friends, he built a cabin with all the luxuries (running water) for his family to enjoy for many years to come. If you know the Fick family, you know how much this cabin means and Landis’ spirit will always be alive in the North Woods.
Landis is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Fick, daughters Jessica (Jesse) Searls, and Eliza (Ted) Proctor and his beautiful granddaughters, Harper, Holland, Tatum and Blakely. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews and many close friends who have become family. He is preceded in death by his Mother, Father, and sister Melissa Tjelmeland.
To celebrate the remarkable life of Landis, his family welcomes all who have loved him to celebrate his life on Friday, June 10 from 4:00-7:00pm at Park Lodge at Terry Trueblood. Remarks will be at 5:00pm. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be directed in Landis Fick’s name to the Iowa City Community School District Foundation; to directly impact the lives and education of children.
