I work in the mental health care field and knew Carol to be active in many related pursuits. Her diligent work has promoted, supported and enhanced many who may never know they benefit from the fruits of her efforts, though they must number many. I never met Carol, but I am benefiting from her important work right now and for that, I wish to impart my tremendous gratitude for the life she lived and celebrate how her tireless efforts on behalf of the greater good are echoing through generations. As a librarian at Iowa City Public Library, I am grateful to be a member of AFSCME Local 183 - my husband and older daughter have chronic autoimmune disorders and require specialist care, which is financially accessible due to the excellent health benefits we receive as City employees who have leverage due to a union. Too, I have two daughters in the Iowa City public schools, benefiting from Carol's work advocating for Title 9 gender equity in public education. Finally, in light of the recent attacks on intellectual freedom and the freedom to read in Iowa, I wish to express enormous gratitude to Carol for laying the foundation for strong intellectual freedom expertise at the Iowa City Public Library. We call on her legacy daily when we invoke our determination to support intellectual freedom for our patrons of every age. Thank you for everything you've done for the Iowa City Public Library and the Iowa City community, Carol! You will be remembered as an icon, an inspiration, and I hope it's okay to say this: a badass lady.

Dear Dan, Andy and Family, In 1993, I met Carol as a new member of NAMIJC; one of my family members was newly diagnosed with a mental illness. Carol was my mentor and huge help with the difficult road of maneuvering the Mental Health Care System.

I will always be grateful. She held NAMIJC Rummage Sales at her home on Washington St to raise funds. Carol's tenacity was incredible for the causes she supported and her voice, for me, will continue to be heard in so many ways.

Danny and Andy , I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Love , the love of her sons, beautiful mom.

As a classmate of Andy’s I always knew of Carol as a kind person. As a student at the University of Iowa I went to Carol to help guide me on a volunteer project with the Iowa City Public Library. Years later, we met up again on a flight from Chicago to Cedar Rapids. Then several years later Carol asked me to make a donation to NAMI, which I happily did because I enjoyed re-connecting with her, and being a part of one of her great causes. Andy’s daughters have a great role model for how to live a full and meaningful life. It was a gift to know her. Anna Sobaski

Carol was involved in so many righteous causes--from voting and civil rights, to union organizing and mental health services, to public power and free speech. I loved working and organizing with Carol. She saw the bigger picture as well as knowing the devil is in the details. Carol was not afraid to take a stand or work hard at the nitty gritty jobs that it takes to make the world a better place. May we all maintain a bit of Carol in ourselves.
