Obituary of Sarah Virginia Helt
Sarah Wilson Helt was born in Sandusky, Ohio, on August 10, 1934, to John and Virginia Wilson. Sarah passed away on January 3, 2022. A 1952 City High graduate, Sarah earned an Elementary Education degree from the University of Iowa. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma, and played a snare drum in the Scottish Highlanders. Survivors include Paul, her husband of 64 years, sons Bryon (Sharon) and Bruce, granddaughters Audrey and Anna (Garrett) Blythe, sister-in-law Joyce Wilson, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends including Nyla Crane.
There was nothing phony about Sarah; an intelligent, straight-forward example of a "what you see is what you get" person. After a few minutes with a stranger, Sarah would know and remember much about the person. She didn't climb Mt. Everest, but not many women raised two sons, kept a husband happy for 64 years, baked delicious pies, worked in the yard, liked to fish, was a dedicated lap swimmer, slept in a teepee, rode a motor scooter around Washington Island, was a substitute teacher in Montezuma, worked as a volunteer for the American Cancer society, organized City High reunions, and kept books for John Wilson Sporting Goods Store.
Sarah knew how and when to laugh, and she shed tears over the tragedies of others. She vigorously defended her family. She loved life, the outdoors, chocolate, and her Pit Bull, Rose.
A family graveside service will be held at a later date. To share a thought, memory or condolence with her family please visit Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service website @ www.gayandciha.com.
The family is grateful for the providers at Bickford Senior Living and St. Croix Hospice who got to know Sarah and cared for her so compassionately the past few months.
