John D. Leonard
Mike, I saw Marie's obituary in today's major Cedar Rapids newspaper and am writing to express
my sympathy. I know she was a family historian and was aware of the large number of first cousins
with Maher family ties. My mother was active in that respect. We had family get togethers at our
home and members of the family stayed at our home for extended periods of time, including our
Grandmother Maher. In those ways, I learned the connections in a large Irish family. Many of
our generation are gone to an eternal reward. As a boy, I spent vacation time at the Harold Maher
farm. I was living out of state when I heard of the formation of The Friends of St. Bridget and
was pleased to hear of its success. Members of both sides of my family were active in its formation.
I regret that I will not be able to attend any of the services for my cousin. Age, weather and recent health
issues preventing. Again, Mike, my sympathy.
