Obituary of Ryan P. Surber

Ryan Surber, 39, of Tiffin passed away Thursday, December 24, 2020 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics as the result of an aneurysm. Ryan was born in January of 1981 at UIHC in Iowa City to Kevin D. and Barbara S. Surber. After graduating from Cedar Rapids Washington, he earned an associate’s degree from Hamilton College and a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Iowa. Before his passing, he had been accepted into the Regent University master’s program for cybersecurity with a management concentration. Ryan’s career was highlighted by several notable roles. He completed an internship at the Department of the Treasury in Washington, DC before going on to become the general manager at Noodles & Company in Iowa City. In November of 2020, he embarked on a new career as an IT support analyst at UIHC. Family & friends were very important to Ryan, and he always put them first. He was a devoted uncle to his niece and nephew Alivia and Noah, who lovingly called him Uncle Ry Ry. Ryan was a man of many passions, which included brewing, camping, cars, cooking, computers, gaming, reading, and movies. He was a regular at Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison, Wisconsin, where he enjoyed the company of friends new and old each year. He had two feline pals named Rand and Moridin, whom he adopted in 2017. His pride and joy was his 2018 Honda Civic Type R; he waited almost a year for a red one to arrive at his local dealership. Ryan possessed a never-ending determination, evidenced by his completion of a full marathon in 2009. He was forever thoughtful of others. He was always smiling and made an effort to make others smile, too. Ryan was an extremely generous person, and even in his passing he continued to give to others by being a tissue donor. He will be missed by many but will continue to live on through the warmth he shared with those he met. Ryan was preceded in death by his father, Kevin D. Surber; grandparents Stanley Surber, Helen Riedel, Richard Porter; and aunts Cheryl Jesse and Tammy Broschat. He is survived by his mother, Barbara S. Surber, sister Megan M. Surber, brother-in-law Joshua Surber, niece and nephew Alivia and Noah Surber, grandmother Opal McNitt, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
