Obituary of Marilyn D. Johnson

Marilyn Johnson died on March 13, 2018 at Mercy Hospital after an extended illness.

Marilyn was born in 1933 to George B. and Margaret (Wadsworth) Hotz.  She grew up on the family farm southeast of Iowa City.  She attended Scott school #9 and graduated from City High in 1951.  Marilyn was a member of First United Methodist Church of Iowa City.

With her longtime friend, Marly Michel, Marilyn co-owned the Craft Corner for a number of years where they made many friends and enjoyed every day.  Marilyn later worked as school secretary at Regina and then in the Business Office at University Hospitals and Clinics, retiring in 1998.

Marilyn enjoyed many happy times spent with her family and close friends.  She especially enjoyed sitting on her front porch with her dog, Sadie, visiting with friends and anyone who happened by.  Marilyn will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Marilyn is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Peg) Raab (John) and Kathy Shemanski (Gary) of Iowa City; two sons, Dave Johnson (Deb) of Iowa City and Scott Johnson (Laura) of Kirksville, MO; six grandchildren Adam Raab (Jolene) of Iowa City, Ryan Johnson (Chelsea) of Iowa City, Julie Artman (Bryan) of Houston, TX, Lindsey Keppler of Des Moines and Garret and Elyse Johnson of Kirksville, MO; and 7 great grandchildren.  She is also survived by one brother, William (Bill) Hotz (Arlene) of Iowa City and their four children; and her miniature Schnauzer Sadie who made her smile every day.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Betty Jean and Nancy Lorraine.

Marilyn’s family wishes to thank her and doctors and nurses at the University Hospital Holden Clinic for their care and concern over the past eight years; the staff of Briarwood and the staff of Mercy Hospital who cared for her over the last month.

A Memorial Service will be 11:30 am Friday, March 16th at the Gay & Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City where a time of visitation will be held from 9:30 – 11:30 am prior to the service.  Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery.

Because of her great love for dogs, Marilyn requested that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Iowa City Animal Shelter.  As an alternative, her family suggests a donation to Iowa City Hospice.
