Obituary of Richard "Dick" D. Hannan
Richard D. “Dick” Hannan, 82, formerly of 3001 Friendship Street, and Legacy Ridge, both in Iowa City, died Friday, December 15, 2017, at Briarwood Care Center in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 11am Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with an hour of visitation prior to the services at the funeral home. Military Honors will be provided at this time. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 pm Tuesday at the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella, Iowa. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Dick’s memory to the Ronald McDonald House. Richard Dale Hannan was born February 19, 1935, in Monroe County, Iowa the son of Edward and Anna B. Hannan. Following high school he entered the United States Air Force serving four years before reenlisting with the Marines serving another four year enlistment. He returned to Iowa where he began a career with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City. Upon his retirement he later began a job with the Iowa City Community Schools.
Dick was united in marriage to Ruth A. Ongna, on June 20, 1964, in Denver, Colorado. The couple enjoyed many things in life together, they loved square dancing, belonging to Ocean Wave Square Dancing Club for over 30 years and to Shirts and Skirts Square Dancing Club out of Ainsworth, Iowa. Dick was a model train collector and builder for nearly fifty years, and had been a member of the American Legion.
His family includes his “Iowa City” family, Matt and Sam Gavin; and Alan and Candy Curry and their son, Kyle. Dick’s surviving siblings are Edward Hannan and his wife, Helen; Jacqueline Steele, and Carolyn Harland; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruth in May of 2010; sister, Bonnie; and brothers, Dean, Alan and Kenneth.
