Obituary of Betty D. Bishop

Betty D. Bishop, 90, of Coralville, died on June 6, 2017 at Lantern Park Care Center.

She was born on October 10, 1926 in Oakland, California to Clarence and Alice (Armour) Dettmann. Betty was raised in Perry, Iowa.  She attended Simpson College in Indianola Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948.  She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.  While at Simpson she met Stanley Bishop and they were married on July 21, 1951 in Des Moines.  They celebrated the 70th anniversary of their first date on April 12th of this year. 

Betty worked at Banker's Life in Des Moines until her children were born, at which time she dedicated her time to her family.  Betty loved to travel the United States, having visited all 50 states and many National Parks.  She also enjoyed gardening, camping, and antiquing.  She volunteered for many organizations that her children belonged to, including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Methodist Church youth group. 

She is survived by her husband, son Rick (Marie) Bishop of Raymond, IA, daughter Mary Bishop of Woodstock, IL, grandson Brian (Molly) Bishop of Worthington, MN, and great grandson Wesley Bishop.  Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Bud Dettmann, and daughter-in-law, Pam Bishop.

Services will be held at 1:00 on Friday June 9, 2017 at Coralville United Methodist Church, with visitation starting at 11:00.  Memorials may be directed to the church or to a charity of your choice.  Online condolences may be shared with her family though the funeral home website @ www.gayandciha.com.  Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Betty’s family and her services.
