Following graduation from University High in Iowa City, Bob attended the State University of Iowa from 1948-55. He played basketball and golf during college, lettering in golf from 1953-55. Golf was a lifelong pursuit. He started working for the University of Iowa in 1956. He moved to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1958 where his career spanned 35 years. During this time, he held the positions of Business Manager, Administrator, Director of Staff Relations and Development, and Senior Assistant Director of UIHC.
Bob married Dorothy "Rusty" Ruschmeyer on September 5, 1953 in Iowa City. Bob and Rusty's professional careers, pursuit of the golf, and the Hawks allowed them to travel extensively. Bob had a great love affair with the Hawks to which his involvement in the Johnson County I-Club, Varsity Club, National I-Club, and University of Iowa Athletic Club can attest. He served as President of each organization through the years. In 2000 he was named the National I-Club Hawk of the Year and received a Special Commendation in 2016.
