It was a pleasure to work with Bob and Marie at Burge Food Service both as a student and as a fellow full-time employee. They were both always friendly to everyone and Bob would remind me when it was a day of fast and abstinence for us Catholics!

My condolences to the entire Svatos family. As one of the many "Burge Kids", Bob was the father and grandfather away from home when we needed an ear to bend. He and Marie opened their home and their hearts to us and helped us to get where we are today. After a stressful week of tests and classes, there was always a relaxing card game to be had at the kitchen table along with entertaining conversation filled with wisdom and laughter.
It is a comfort to know that Bob is back together with his sweet Marie.
Thank you for sharing your family with us.
Maggie, sorry to hear of your father's passing, your are Cindy and my thoughts & prayers
I am one of many Burge students that had the pleasure of working with as well as really getting to know Bob and Marie. I always looked forward to working with them. They always made the time go by quickly as well as make it fun. I have so many fond memories of them. They welcomed many of us "kid" out to their house with open arms. I remember going out to their house many times playing cards and many get togethers. They were like my local grandparents. Definitely loved by all who knew them.
To the Svatos family, I'm so sorry for your loss.
I am yet another Burge kid who was blessed to have known and loved both Bob and Marie. Bob surely did have a twinkle in his eye and an ever present smile. He was a great man.
Both he and Marie were a constant source of encouragement, support and guidance. Theirs was a home away from home and they provided a sense of family for me when I was far from my own. And like others have said before me, they didn't do this for just onethey did it for many!
On Earth or in Heaven, they have always been angels to me.
My prayers and sympathies are with the entire Svatos family.
I had the pleasure of working with Bob and Marie for several years as Manager at Burge Food Service. Both Bob and Marie were wonderful with the students and had a wonderful relationship with them. They had a great way of 'keeping them in line' and yet making the work pleasant. I have very fond memories of both of them.

I was one of the many Burge kids that was taken under the wing by Bob and Marie. My time in Iowa City would not have been nearly as wonderful without them. Their influance on me is still evident today, and i am sure many others could say the same. God Bless them both for what they did for so many.
I knew Bob and Marie via our daughter when she was a student at U of I. After graduation we had dinner in Iowa City and "the important people" in her life were invited. The guest list included us (her parents), grandmother, extra grandmother she had known all her life, sister, aunt, uncle and Bob and Marie. Some of us had to work for 21 years (and be a blood relative) to be invited; Bob and Marie made it in less than four years and justifiably so! I'm also going to add I rarely heard Bob OR Marie, it was almost always
Bob AND Marie.
We hear the phrase, "They were always there for me" often; perhaps too often. In the case of Bob and Marie that phrase can't be used enough. They were "there" for many, many young people, and therefore, "there" for us parents as well. Please remember our daughter was only one among many affected by the wisdom and love of your parents and grandparents. Things learned while playing cards, grilling out at the house on Rochester street, talking and listening to advice dispensed at that home contributed to their education. There the values given them by their parents and family were built upon due to the wisdom of Bob and Marie.
We have talked about Bob and Marie many times and those talks would lead us to Bob. He was one heck of a good guy. Now we know it is no longer Bob alone but, once again,
Bob AND Marie.
Ohh So sad to hear of the loss of Bob. I met Bob & Marie down at Burge while I was in college & kept in contact witht hen for years. I came to their home many times & took their formal picture once. Bob and Marie were great people & i miss talking to them. I asm very sad to hear Bob passed, but he is with Miss Marie now!! :)
I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Bob early on in my career. Thoughts of him, his kindness, his friendship and his gratitude often spurred me on in difficult times. My son still plays with the tractor Bob gave him shortly after he was born and now my daughter plays with it too. We will keep that toy for our grandchildren some day and I will keep his memory in my heart for at least as long. I think of him often and I will continue to at least every time I see a John Deere. Thank you all for being part of my life.
I was a Burge food service kid who worked with Bob and Marie. I have so many fond memories of them during my college years. I am sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He will be missed.
My condolences to the Svatos family.
Our deepest condolences to the Svatos family with the passing of Bob. I was one of those Burge Food Service kids that worked with Bob and Marie. Have many great memories of fun times working with Bob. Bob and Marie were always wanting to make sure that the Burge kids were taken care of. I still remember those game nights at your house and the picnic set up when a few of the graduated kids were back in town. It was a joy to have known and worked with you. God Bless you and your family!
My husband Richard had many fond memories of working at the service station by the interstate. My sympathy to your family on losing Bob. He will be missed.

Tim and Beck, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I am not going to be in town for the services but I will be catching up with you when I get back. I know Bob was a character and he left you enough memories to pick up right where he left off here on earth. My deepest condolences to you and your entire family. I will be in touch soon.
