Obituary of Jeanette S. Power

Jeannette "Jean" Scott Power, the daughter of George F. Scott and Mary Simpson Hope, was born on August 14, 1915 in Newton, Iowa. She graduated from Newton High School in 1933 and attended Drake University. Jean was united in marriage with John X. Power on November 17, 1935 in Newton. Jean and John had three children: Beth, Joyce and Scott. Jean was a dedicated community volunteer. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a member of the session, a Deacon, singing in the choir and was the head of the nursery. She was on the Newton Community School Board for 20 years and service as its President for a number of years. She was also Mayor of Lamb's Grove, a member of the PTA and a leader for Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts. She was active with the American Field Service Foreign Students, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society and the University of Iowa President's Club. Jean and John created several scholarships for NHS students and teachers. In 2007 Jean moved to Iowa City, Iowa and five years later moved to Solon, Iowa. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Jean died at the age of 97 on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 in Solon. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John X. Power. Those left to honor her memory are her two daughters, Beth (Devon) Dietz of Marion, Iowa, and Joyce (Richard) Pattschull of Iowa City, Iowa; son, William Scott (Joan) Power of Burlington, Iowa; her eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Pattschull, Bryan Pattschull, Catherine (James) Spencer, Matthew (Arianne) Power, Joshua (Alyson) Power, Amy Power, Zachary (Shara) Power and Ellen Power; four great-grandchildren, Clive and Josiah Power and Maddison and Bryce Spencer; her sister, Kathryn Scott Jones of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; brother, William F. Scott of St. Joseph, Michigan; her niece, Patricia Scott; and nephew, Jason Jones. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton, with the Reverend John Duling officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the John X. and Jean Scott Power Memorial Scholarship Fund, Newton Dollars for Scholarship. P.O. Box 1492, Newton, Iowa.
