Obituary of Orianna N. Haman

Orianna Neva Buchmayer Haman, 88, of Newport Township, died Saturday, September 22, 2012, at the Solon Care Center. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the funeral home with burial following at the Newport Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Beef up Our Troops. Online condolences may be sent to Orianna's family through the web @www.gayandciha.com Orianna was born July 9, 1924 to Joseph and Neva (Kessler) Buchmayer. She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1942 and was a regular attendee of the class 42 reunion events. She never forgot she was part of the Class of '42 and wrote the words to the class song. She worked at the First National Bank before marrying Robert Haman January 9, 1947 in Iowa City. They always farmed in the Newport Township area. She also worked at University High school for 6 years. Orianna was a 4-H leader for over 40 years. As a 4-H leader, she not only taught club members things like how to sew and how to refinish furniture, but also impacted the lives of many young people by teaching life skills, creative problem solving and being a positive role model. She taught Sunday school at the Solon United Methodist Church for many years. Orianna was active in the Johnson County Farm Bureau Program. At one time she was the County Safety chair, leading a campaign for slow moving vehicle signs and helping locate stop signs within the county. She was a longtime member of the Johnson County Sheep and Wool Growers Association. She also volunteered at Ushers Ferry Historic Village in Cedar Rapids and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1996. She was a life time member of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Uthoff of Iowa City and grandchildren Sarah Uthoff and Robbie Uthoff (Jen), sister Jean (Elmer) Hahn and sister-in-laws, Leona Buchmayer and Joan Haman, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, Karl. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Orianna's family and her services.
