Leonard S. Feldt
1925 - 2011
Condolences
My beloved Dr. Feldt will always be a cherished memory in my heart. From time to time, I would call just to say hello,to hear his warm voice and to share memories and gentle laughter with him. Whenever I missed him, I would talk to his beloved wife, Natalie. It gave me joy that he remembered me and was always interested in my family and my progress. He was so great in my eyes. I took careful notes and even taped his very words in the many challenging courses that he taught. He co-chaired my dissertation and kept a watchful and encouraging eye over me. I remember calling once to hear him say 'I have no doubt that you would be a teacher'. Those words comforted me and spurred me on. Dr. Feldt never preached his faith but it was evident in the life he lived. He never used his gifts to elevate himself, yet he was a giant among men and, perhaps, a prophet for our times. God Bless you, my dear, wonderful friend. And, Natalie, God will never leave you nor forsake you, even until that Great and Shining Day when we will be reunited with our loved ones. Dear Natalie,
We haven't been in touch for some time but I think of you and was saddened by the news of Leonard's passing. I knew of it too late to appear at the service. You have my sincere sympathy and prayers for comfort and peace as you deal with this phase of life.
Peace,
Marie
Dr. Feldt was, indeed, a superb teacher. In "Design of Experiments" he made even the most difficult concepts accessible. He served on my dissertation committee and was very helpful at each stage. His contributions to the state and nation are legendary. My sympathy to his family during this time of loss.
I was so sad to hear about his sudden demise. Accept our deepest sympathies.
Prof. Leonard S. Feldt was one my beloved teachers. He was my Academic Supervisor from 1973- 1976 and I did my PhD thesis on Reliability Theory. He was an amazing teacher, and an inspiring personality. I was in touch with him and the last e-mail I received from him was just a few weeks back. He said that he is working on his last research paper that he will publish.
We join with you to pray for the departed soul.
Dear Natalie and entire Feldt family,
It is the end of an era ... but Design of Experiments lives forever.
Thank you, Dr. Feldt!
This is Rashid Al-Mehrzi from Oman received a Ph.D degree from Iowa in 2003. I would like to express my sadness and condolence and sympathy to the news about Prof. Feldt. We are really losing a great psychometrician fellow that has greatly contributed to the field through teaching, publication, discussion, presentation, attendance and every other things.
The more important is what the person leaves behind and Prof. Feldt left a lot that keeps him alive around us.
Dr. Feldt is one of the greatest professors I ever have. I learned so much from Dr. Feldt's Experimental design and measurement theory classes. He served on my dissertation committee and I am truly grateful for his advising through the process. He will be missed very much.
I had never thought of myself as being particularly good at math and so when I entered the graduate program in Psychological & Quantitative Foundations in the mid-1980s as an older student and mother of 3 young children I trembled in fear of taking the required statistics courses. Leonard's explanations in Design of Experiments class, however, were so clear that learning the material was (almost) easy. More importantly, his door was always open and he never made me feel stupid for asking questions about even the most simple formulas or concepts that I didn't understand. Instead, he patiently worked with me until I understood. He was a remarkable teacher and mentor and a great human being. I will always remember him fondly. My sympathies go out to his family.
Leonard was the first faculty person I met when I came to Iowa for graduate school. He spent an hour talking with me and my wife, giving us much helpful information about the city, the university, and grad school in general. His open, friendly, soft-spoken manner were on display in every interaction I ever had with him, and I am thankful for the knowledge and wisdom he shared with me and so many others, both in and out of the classroom. He was one of my professors, for which I am very grateful--but even more importantly, he was a valued friend and I will miss him greatly. My condolences to Natalie and the rest of his family.
From my first days at the College almost forty years ago, you were a good friend , inspiring colleague, and the source of sage wisdom. I will miss you...Condolences to the family.
My deepest sympathy to Natalie and family. My thoughts return to long ago years in Iowa City and many happy times.
My deepest sympathies to the entire Feldt family. I have literally known Dr. Feldt,my entire life and have wonderful memories of him as a kind, funny, gentle man. He will be missed, not only by me and my family, but by the thousands of people who's lives he touched.
Fondly,
Matt
Dr. Feldt was intelligent, accomplished, unpretentious, and both gentle and strong. He lived a long and very good life. I will remember him with equally great measures of fondness and respect. May you be comforted among all who mourn.
Dr. Feldt was a kind and gentle man. He was a gifted teacher/mentor and a tireless scholar. I cherish the picture of the two of us that was taken at his birthday celebration that he sent to me with a short note. What a thoughtful gesture. He always remembered me by name and where I worked.
I met with professor Feldt in 2003 when entered into the Psychological and Quantitative Foundations Porgram at the University of Iowa. His kindness toward students and high academic standards impressed in me deeper sense of respect and admiration.
My condolences to everyone of his family.
When I was in graduate school 2000-2005, Dr. Feldt already was retired but still went to the office every day. I used to try to beat him to the office in the morning and I lost miserably. Dr. Feldt was such an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace. You will be missed dearly.
