Obituary of Bernice K. Worden

Bernice Worden, 91, of Iowa City, died Thursday, October 13, 2011, at the Lone Tree Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, October 17, 2011, at the Gay & Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home. Entombment will take place following the services at Memory Gardens Mausoleum. A memorial fund has been established in Bernice's name. Online condolences may be sent to her family through the web @www.gayandciha.com. Bernice Haberman was born May 6, 1920, in Kimbrae, MN; daughter of Theodore and Katherine (Probst) Haberman. She married Alvin Worden on April 28, 1937, in Dundee, MN. For most of her life she was at home raising her 14 children; Bernice worked for a number of years in Iowa City at Kresges, Mercy Hospital and the University Food Service in the residence halls. She always enjoyed her time in her garden; she canned much of what she grew and also enjoyed cooking. She was an avid Bingo and card player. Prior to moving to the Lone Tree Care Center, Bernice lived at Autumn Park and Emerson Point in Iowa City. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. Her family includes her children, Kathleen Richardson of Iowa City, Mary (James) Morrill of Brandon, FL, Richard (Gloria) Worden of North Liberty, Roger (Phyllis) Worden of Okabena, MN, Thomas (Darla) of Mankato, MN, David (Julie) Worden of Fulda, MN, Robert Worden of Iowa City , Mark (LuAnn) of North Liberty, Charles (Ursula) of Farmington, IA; son-in-law, Dale Sanderson of Iowa City; daughter-in-law, Delien Worden of Westbrook, MN; as well as 27 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin in 1977; sons, Ronald, Ted, Daniel and James; daughter, Janet Sanderson; her parents; several grandchildren; son-in-law, Bob Richardson; and her daughter-in-law, Nancy Worden.
