Obituary of Goldie V. Freeman Westbrook
Goldie V. Freeman Westbrook, 98 of 1413 Brookwood Drive, Iowa City died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 5, 2007, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Wallace Bubar officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Goldies memory to the Barry Freeman Memorial Fund, c/o of the University of Iowa Foundation or to the charity of your choice. Goldie Viola Lemmons was born August 4, 1908, in Grant City, Missouri the daughter of George W. and Emma (Eagon) Lemmons. She attended school in Grant City. She married Ralph J. Freeman on January 13, 1925 in Grant City. The couple moved to Iowa City with their family in 1929, here Ralph began a career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Ralph might have been the agent, but Goldie was very much part of his success in his field. She always found the time and energy in assisting her husband in business, raising their family, and especially enjoyed wintering in Florida in their Airstream. Ralph died October 3, 1980. She later married Raleigh E. Westbrook on June 7, 1990, who along with his late wife, were dear friends of Ralph and Goldies. Raleigh died on June 17, 1993. She continued to winter in Florida, leading an active life, caring for her family and friends. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Iowa City. Her family includes, three sons, Robert Freeman and his wife, Marion of Loveland, CO, Jim Freeman and his wife, Sandy of Iowa City, and Gary Freeman and his wife, Carlin of Coralville; 9 grandchildren, John (Judy) Freeman of Loveland, CO, Dan Freeman of Independence, IA, Rebecca (Tony) Chesek of Riverside, CA, Shelley Freeman George of Syracuse, NY, Christine (Calvin) Johnson of Philadelphia, PA, Mike (Tammy) Freeman Minneapolis, MN, Susan V. Freeman Fischer (Timothy Fischer) of Golden, CO, Scott (Sue) Freeman of Coralville, and Chad (Teresa) Freeman of Tiffin; great-grandchildren, Nathan Freeman, Lauren Freeman, Jacob Freeman, Jennifer Chesek, William Chesek, David Chesek, Chelsea Johnson, Alexis Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Lindsay George, Caden Freeman, Brooke Freeman, Joel Vandenberg, Ben Fischer, Taylor Freeman, Clay Freeman, Madison Freeman, Hunter Stokes, Hanna Stokes, and Gage Freeman; Goldies sister, Elizabeth Saggese of Chattanooga, TN. Goldie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughter, Betty Louise as an infant, grandson, Barry W. Freeman, and four brothers and sisters.
