Obituary of Donald Slothower
Donald L. Slothower, age 78 of 965 Slothower Road, Iowa City died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Windmill Manor in Coralville surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2005, at the Coralville United Methodist Church with the Reverend Doug Williams officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. Visitation will be from 3 to 7pm Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Iowa City Hospice or the Coralville United Methodist Church. Donald Leroy Slothower was born June 9, 1926, in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Charles and Letha (Wynkoop) Slothower. Following graduation from Sioux City Central High School, he attended Morningside College in Sioux City. Don married Sandra D. Lang on November 11, 1950, in Sioux City. Moving to the Coralville area, Don worked for the City of Iowa City in the Engineering Department and later as the Director of Public Works for the City of Coralville. During these years he also worked as registered Land Surveyor. In 1973 He and his family moved to their farm west of Iowa City. He was a longtime and very active member of the Coralville United Methodist Church having served in many capacities during the years including as a Stephan Minister. Don was also one of the longest serving on the Coralville Volunteer Fire Department. He was a board member and strong supporter of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program in this area, he loved old cars and trucks, especially driving his old red fire truck in the area parades. Don was one who respected and enjoyed the outdoors, belonging to the Sierra Club. In addition, he was one who enjoyed playing and watching sports. His family includes his wife, Sandy; daughters, Sherri Bergstrom and her husband, John of Glen Ellyn, IL; and Tammi Anderson and her husband, Scott of Iowa City; sons, Jeffrey Slothower and his wife, Pat of Corvallis, OR, and Tim Slothower of Coralville, seven grandchildren, Kari, Kathryn and Michael Bergstrom; Megan and Charlie Slothower, and Mallory and McKenzie Anderson; sister, Lu Elwood of Gordon, NE; and brother and his wife, Charles and Penny Slothower of Renton, WA. Don was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Birdie Bolie. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Dons family and his services.
