Obituary of L. Rozella Hurd

L. Rozella Hurd, age 86 of 1416 Brookwood Drive, Iowa City, died Monday, February 16, 2004, at the Lone Tree Care Center, Lone Tree, Iowa following an extended illness. Private funeral services will be held on Friday, February 20, 2004, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Lathelma Rozella Griggs Hurd was born January 6, 1918, in Johnston, Iowa the daughter of Archie R. and Lelah L. (Horton) Griggs. She attended and graduated from Bouton, Iowa High School. On April 19, 1941, she married Joseph W. Hurd in Perry, Iowa. The couple lived in the Perry area for nearly twenty years; they have also lived in Ames, Boone, and Marshalltown before moving to Iowa City in 1989. While living in Ames, Rozella worked for Younkers. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Perry, where she was active in the ladies guild. Her family was most important in her life and those around her benefited by her generosity and love that she so freely shared. Her family includes her husband, Joseph; daughters and their husbands, Joanne and Philip O’Gara of Clinton, and Lois and Jim Friday of Iowa City; sons, Dennis and his wife, Mary Hurd of Bettendorf, and Thomas Hurd of Mason City; twelve grandchildren, Cynthia Flagel, Jeannette Slade, Theresa Vondran, Michelle O’Gara, Laura Friday, Tyson Friday, Michael Hurd, Jody Hurd, Kelly Hurd, Emily Hurd, Kyle Hurd, and Alyse Hurd; nine great-grandchildren, Chelsie Flagel, Ryan Flagel, Courtney Vondran, Austin Slade, Mackenzie Slade, Nathaniel Hartman, Marianna Hurd, Peter Hurd, and Kiera Mirelli; and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters.
