Obituary of Alvin Niswander

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 28, 2003, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Solon, Iowa. Memorial donations can be made in Al’s memory to Iowa City Hospice. Alvin Ray Niswander Jr. was born May 7, 1937, in Iowa City the son of Alvin R. Sr. and Gertrude (Kost) Niswander. He grew up in Iowa City graduating from Iowa City City High School in 1955. On December 18, 1955, he married Shirley A. Cloud here in Iowa City. Al’s life work has been with cars. He has been associated with a number of service stations in this area over the years, retiring from Dusty’s Tire and Service in December of 2001. Prior to Dusty’s, Al and Shirley owned and operated Service Unlimited in Coralville. He loved working with cars, but more importantly, his family came first, and as his family grew with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he enjoyed being with them more and more. Al’s passion for fishing was obvious by his tackle, poles, time spent casting, and bringing in the big one, he also enjoyed spending time outside listening and watching birds. His family includes his wife, Shirley; mother, Gertrude; sons, Arnie and his special friend, Wendy, Andy and his wife, Marlene, and Alan and his wife, Barb; daughter, Selina and her husband, Marty Roth; grandchildren, Crystal, Tony, Kelsi, Amy, Alex, Jayci, James, Jessica, Jennifer, and Kimberli; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Chaseton, Jinnacy, Aidan, Preston, and Emily; sisters, Shirley and her husband, Arnie, and Jeannie; brothers, Tommy and his wife, Rosie, Johnny and his wife, Penny, Richie and his wife, Connie, and Eddie and his wife, Lori. Al was preceded in death by his father, and brother, James.
