Obituary of Kathryn Mulligan

Her family includes a son Bernard C. and wife Lois Barber of Iowa City, daughter in-law Dorothy Barber of Illinois City, Illinois, 9 grandchildren, Keri Barber of Kalona, Iowa, Brice Barber and friend Sarah of Iowa City, Jessie Westfall and husband Luke of Muscatine, Iowa, Tony and wife Lori Barber of Milan, Illinois, Doris Kilkenny and husband Kevin of Dixon, California, Charles Kenney of Dallas, Texas, Dona Bivens and husband Randy of Taylor Ridge, Illinois, Lloyd Kenney Jr. and wife Patsy of Illinois City, Illinois and Diane Gehn and husband Eric of Andalusia, Illinois: 19 great-grandchildren, Austin, Nicholas, Mikayla, Madeline, Rio, Alondra, Marquez, David, Megan, Jason, Erin, Demitra, Tyler, Mike, Phillip, Travis, Lexie, Brandy and Katelyn, a sister Marge Stevens of Crystal Lake, Iowa and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a son Harold L. Barber, a sister Mary Sheets, four brothers, John Kloster, George Kloster, Tony Kloster and Gene Kloster, several brothers and sister in-laws and a daughter in law Joan Strabla Barber. Kathryn was born on August 13, 1915 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of George and Margaret Oberst Kloster. She married Harold I. Barber on February 15, 1932 in Sioux Falls South Dakota. For many years they farmed near Buffalo Center in Winnebago County, Iowa. From 1949 to 1959 they operated the Standard filling station in Crystal Lake, Iowa. In 1960 Harold died and Kathryn moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She later married James P. Mulligan on September 7, 1963 in Milwaukee. She worked at the J.C. Penny Warehouse in Milwaukee, was the director of Housekeeping at Milwaukee Hospital and retired from the Amron Corporation. They moved to Iowa City in 1975 where James died in 1978. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary and the Catholic Daughters of America. In 1999 due to failing health she moved to Muscatine. Kathryn enjoyed bingo, crocheting, fishing, cards, walking and spending time on the river boats. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For those that knew her we will miss her whistling and will remember her thirst for knowledge, always reading and learning even in her later years. Memorials may be given to Kathryn Barber Mulligan memorial fund.
