Obituary of Margaret A. Goode

Margaret A. “Meg” Goode, 73 of Iowa City died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City from complications of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. There will be a time of fellowship and lunch served from 12 noon on Tuesday until the service time at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Memorial donations can be made in Meg’s memory to Iowa City Hospice or Iowa City Free Medical Clinic. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Margaret Arlene Clark was born December 14, 1936, in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of L.A. and Viola Clark. Growing up in Waterloo, she attended schools there graduating from East High School in 1953. While in high school, she was very active in many activities, especially in music where she was a violist in the orchestra and singing in the choir. Following graduation from high school, she attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls where she received her teaching certificate. She returned later to receive her BA degree from Northern Iowa University. From 1956 through 1962 she taught fifth grade in Toledo, Iowa. She was one to take great pride in her students advancing in their education, especially evident when the Iowa Basic Skills Test results indicated the progress of her students. While living in Toledo, she met her future husband, who was the vocational agricultural teacher at Toledo High School. Meg was one that believed in giving back to her community, she was active in the Women’s Business and Professional Organization, holding several offices in the Tama-Toledo branch, later in the Marshalltown and Iowa City branches of (BPW). She also had served as president of the Jaycettes while living in Toledo. She had belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown and later when they moved to Iowa City in 1980 became member of the First Presbyterian Church. Meg was a woman of strong a strong Christian faith, reinforcing that was the reading of the Holy Bible, many times through, last count was 24 times! Following Wayne’s retirement from Protein Blenders, Inc. here in Iowa City, it was common to see Meg and Wayne walking their three mile stretch along Stewart and Dubuque Streets. On these walks they met many neighbors, their pets, and the many glories of Mother Nature. They marveled at the deer, wild turkeys, eagles and other species of birds. Meg loved watching birds, she has identified over 40 species by sight and song. She could hardly wait for the return of the wrens in the spring and Baltimore Orioles for their daily ration of “Grape Jelly”. She was also and avid reader, averaging 2 to 3 books per week. She has for years donated hundreds of books to various libraries, clubs, friends, and organizations. Her family includes her husband, Wayne; son, Allen of Iowa City; and a granddaughter, Jasmine Huff of Brighton, CO; cousins, Patricia (Ron) Fox of Colorado Springs, CO: Alison (Dr. Erol) Biggs of Castle Rock, CO; Wilma Massey of Clinton, IA; and Gail W. Roat of Augusta, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Carol Jean Clark; and her brother, who died during the Korean Conflict, Marine Corp. Arthur Clark.
