Obituary of Harold A. Cox

Harold A. “Tony” Cox. 89 of Iowa City died at his home Saturday, May 22, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with Military Honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Tony’s memory. Online condolences may be sent to his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Harold Amos Cox was born November 30, 1920, in Rural Johnson County, Iowa the son of Roy G. and Florence A. (Stover) Cox. During WWII Tony served in the United States Army. During his military service he served in the South Pacific and was wounded in the occupation of Okinawa. Returning to Iowa City following service he married Marian A. Kuhlmann on September 15, 1949. The couple made their home here, where they raised their four children and Tony worked as a self-employed plaster for a number of contractors in the area for many years. He was a member of the VFW Post 3949, having served as its commander; the Disabled Veterans, also serving as its commander; and the American Legion. He volunteered as a driver for the Veterans Administration Hospital for several years. One of his proudest moments was being one of the first Veterans of this area to be recognized on the Veterans Trail at the Coralville Reservoir. Tony enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and some hunting. He liked his pets throughout the years, and cherished his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they came along! His family includes his wife of over 60 years, Marian; children, Kathryn Pieper (Randy) of Donnelson, IA; Randall Cox (Linda) of Marion, IA; Steven Cox of Iowa City, and Cynthia Dohrer (Steve) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Nathane Pieper (Laura), Jaime Kemp (Jeff), Cody Pieper, Scott Pieper (Brandi), Amanda Myers (Jeremy), Angela Dohrer and Gwendolyn Dohrer; great-grandchildren, Michelle, Marissa, Brendon, and Brianna Kemp, and Faith and Emma Myers; 4 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, sister, Shirley Yerington (Robert) of Muscatine; and in-laws, Karl Kuhlman, June Cox and Nellie Cox all of Iowa City. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Clifford, Louis, and Donald; and 3 sisters, Darlene Cox, Lila Edmondson, and Leona Benson.
