Obituary of Carl J. Berridge
Carl J. Berridge, 80 of rural Solon died Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, after several months of a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation has been established in his memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Carl Joseph Berridge was born May 25, 1929, in Hills, Iowa the son of Harry and Gretchen (Smith) Berridge. He attended Iowa City Schools. On July 2, 1949, he was united in marriage to Ruby Jean Long at the former First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City (Old Brick). For a number of years he worked for Hawkeye Lumber, and for over 31 years he worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation, retiring as the supervisor of the Johnson County Roads. Carl was a member of the Solon United Methodist Church, had been in the Iowa National Guard for nearly ten years, and he was a certified gun smith. His family includes his wife, Ruby Jean; daughter, Roxanne Vincent (Daniel) of Solon; son, Kim Carl Berridge of Solon; 3 grandchildren, Shonna Stevenson (Chris), Erica Vincent, and Brian Vincent; 3 great-grandchildren, Cameryn, Ben, and Cole; sister-in-law, Eunice Goodrich of Mt. Vernon, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Terrace Berridge; nephew, Brad Berridge, and sister-in-law, Jackie Tucker Berridge Burns.
