Obituary of Carl Chadek

Carl Chadek, lifetime resident of Iowa City and well-known businessman, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009. He celebrated his 100th birthday in September, 2009. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 30, 2009, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, where a parish vigil service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Visiting Nurse Association and Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for his family at www.gayandciha.com. Carl Joseph Chadek was born September 22, 1909, in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Lulu (Grizel) Chadek. He grew up in Iowa City and graduated from City High School in 1928. Carl married Frieda Ann Villhauer on September 16, 1933 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City. They met during childhood and shared a marriage of devotion to each other. Carl started Carl Chadek Trucking Service in 1929. He and Frieda operated the business for over 75 years. Carl enjoyed family times, gardening, hunting and fishing. He was known for providing excellent customer service and for his desire and capacity for work. His skill with a front-end loader and other equipment was equal to that of an artist painting the finest details of a masterpiece. He will be remembered for his boundless kindness and patience and for his willingness to help others. His sense of humor and many anecdotal stories entertained family and friends. Carl was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, Johnson County Farm Bureau, Eagles Lodge, Izaak Walton League, and the American Truck Historical Society. He was inducted into the City High Hall of Fame and received the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce "Roots Award." Carl's family includes three daughters, Jeannette Fulton of Iowa City; Carolyn (Richard) Mathies of Fredonia, WI; and Lorna (Jack) Fesler of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren, Mike (Karyn) Fulton of Iowa City, Martha (Aggrey) Ogoli of Iowa City, Mark Fulton of Iowa City, Melissa Fulton of North Liberty, Ann (Eric) Rosenthal of Cedar Rapids, Tom Mathies of Verona, WI, Sam (Traci) Mathies of St. Johns, FL, Susan (Tim) Prodell of Madison, WI, Brian (Tracy) Fesler of Nashville, TN, Sarah (Rickey) Wasson of Stanton, KY, Lisa Fesler of Coralville, and Chris (Denise) Fesler of Riverside; 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; and his sister, Hazel Miley of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews. He also considered the Villhauer relatives his family. He was preceded in death by Frieda, his beloved wife of 67 years; his parents; brother, Paul Chadek; sister, Dorothy Zimmerman; and son-in-law, Keith Fulton.
