Obituary of James L. Streit

James Streit, 59, of Iowa City died Monday, April 06, 2009 at his home. A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009 with military honors at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be held 3 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Following the service there will be a potluck at the VFW Post #3949. James Streit was born November 22, 1949 in San Diego, CA to John and Nellie (Helgson) Streit. While James was young his family moved to Waterloo, IA where he attended high school. Following high school James joined the United States Marine Corps. Later on James moved to Iowa City where he worked as a chef at Midtown Family Restaurant. He was a member of The American Legion; James also enjoyed woodworking, and fishing James’ family includes two sons Bret Streit of Waterloo, James Streit Jr. (Bridget Dual) of Iowa City; two daughters Cheryl (Chris) Cole of Coralville, Tasha Streit of Iowa City; grandchildren Aiden, Olivia Cole of Coralville; life long companion Deb Streit of Iowa City; former wife Jane Streit of Waterloo; brother John Streit of Naples, FL; two sisters Jackie Garrett, Sharon Garrett both of Council Bluffs, IA and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Nellie Streit, and sister Julie Doblin. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for James’ family and services.
