Obituary of Leona Amanda Russell

Leona A. Russell, 95 of 903 Hudson Avenue, Iowa City died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family, and under the loving and compassionate care of Iowa City Hospice and Dr. Michael Burns. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Leona’s memory. Leona Amanda Poggenpohl was born May 15, 1913, in Iowa City the daughter of Edward and Katherine “Tillie” (Sietz) Poggenpohl. She worked for Woolworth’s downtown Iowa City from 1948 to 1959. Leona was united in marriage to Floyd W. Russell on April 3, 1953, in Iowa City. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, collecting angels, and spending time with her dog, Holly. Leona was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Her family includes two brothers, Edward Poggenpohl (Bonnie) of Camanche, IA; and Maynard Poggenpohl (Laura) of North Liberty; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; including two nieces who have been Leona’s care providers for some time, Jackie and Debbie. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd; two sisters, Margaret Glass and Grace Ratchford; one brother, Frank Poggenpohl; and her faithful friend, Holly.
