Obituary of Emmett E. Evans

Emmett E. Evans 88 of 807 7th. Avenue, Iowa City died Thursday, January 8, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 12, 2009, at the First Christian Church in Coralville. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4pm Sunday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in his memory to the First Christian Church in care of the Building Fund. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Emmett Emory Evans was born February 23, 1920 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Harvey and Vica (Price) Evans. During World War II Emmett served in the Pacific with the 81st. Infantry Division of the United States Army. Returning from service he was united in marriage to Wilma Toll on October 27, 1946. The couple moved to Iowa City from Oskaloosa when he transferred here with Hawkeye Lumber Company. In 1952 Emmett joined the Iowa City Police Department, retiring as Chief of Police in 1975. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police, Iowa State Policeman's Association, Local #16 of the Iowa City Police Association, and a member of the American Legion for over fifty years. In retirement he enjoyed volunteering at Mercy Hospital and delivering for the "Meals on Wheels" program. He was a longtime avid fan of the City High Little Hawks, and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, but most dear to his heart was his family! Emmett's family includes his wife, Wilma; daughters, Janis McVeigh and her husband, Dan of Cedar Rapids; Peggy Wooldrik and her husband, David of Iowa City; son, Richard Evans and his wife, Donna; four grandchildren, Megan Wooldrik, Matthew Wooldrik, Kara Evans, and Ben Evans, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister, and two half brothers.
