Obituary of Walter F. Schmidt

Walter F. Schmidt, 103 of Iowa City died Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Heather Hartsell officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 6pm Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Walter’s memory to First Presbyterian Church or Mercy Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Walter Fred Schmidt was born October 28, 1904, in Oxford, Iowa the son of Fred and Emma (Walters) Schmidt. Following graduation from Oxford High School in 1922, he attended Cedar Rapids Business College. On October 5, 1927, he married Vilda G. Saxton in Oxford. Walter had been associated with Iowa State Bank & Trust Company all of his adult working career, retiring in 1969. He was a longtime member of the following, The First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, the Elks, Masonic Lodge, and Shriners. He had lived in his home on Magowan Street for many years before moving to Melrose Meadows nearly five years ago, where he has enjoyed the transition. His family includes two children, June Roth and her husband, Robert of Itasca, IL, and Chauncey Schmidt of Woodside, CA; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Vilda; daughter-in-law, Anne Schmidt, and brother, Ivan Schmidt.
